Herbert John Fleure was born on June 6th 1877, in Guernsey. He suffered from poor health as a child, and therefore received his education at home. By 1897 his health had improved sufficiently to allow him to take up an open scholarship to the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, where he read zoology, geography and botany. Fleure was born in Guernsey. He had a long association with University of Wales, Aberystwyth, as a student, 1897-1901, and then after study at the Zoological Institute, Zürich, 1902-1904, successively as Lecturer, Head of Department and Professor in Zoology, Geology, Geography and Anthropology, 1904-1930.
